RVS school of architecture's visit to Cubbon park

On 14th July 2023, about 40 students from RVS school of Architecture, Chennai, along with 3 teachers visited Cubbon Park to see the various water management strategies implemented in the park.

The walk started at 5pm from the metro station entrance. The tour started with some background of Bangalore's geography and hydrology, the history of the park and some information about the water related challenges that the park used to face before the intervention.

The concept of recharge wells was introduced along with a short discussion about the Mannu Vaddar community.

The student’s also noticed the slope of the land leading to discussions beyond recharge wells and into the cascading tank systems. The students also noticed the wells inside ponds/Kalyanis and hypothesised various ideas of their function.

The tour continued with visiting some open wells and how they are currently being used in the park. Discussions about how these could be implemented similarly/differently in their own city - Chennai followed. A visit to the Karagada Kunte gave them insights into the cultural domain of wells and water in the city, at the same time, discussions about wastewater management and reuse continued with a look at the neighbouring STP.

The tour ended with a visit to the mural inside the metro station. Interesting interpretations of the mural gave them an in-depth understanding of the technicalities and socio-economics of water in an urban setting.
